Players have been put through their paces at the initial testing and fitness preparation stage of their return to pre-season. Behind-the-scenes footage released by the club’s media team show new signings Ben Hamer and Max Lowe meeting their new teammates having sealed free transfer deals.

Also shown in the coverage is Chris Powell. An important member of Danny Röhl’s coaching set-up, the former Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town manager told a national radio station in the days after Wednesday sealed their historic survival last season that his contract was approaching its end in June – a stipulation he made himself on the basis he hadn’t yet worked with Röhl and thought it wise to see how things went without committing to a longer stint.

The Star since reported that Powell was expected to be handed fresh terms to continue at S6, something later confirmed by the 54-year-old. It remains unclear as to what stage a proposed new deal is at, though his presence at Middlewood Road is surely a sign beyond any lingering doubt that he will stay on this season.
