The Philadelphia Phillies (52-26) and Detroit Tigers (36-42) resume their series at Comerica Park on Tuesday after a thorough thrashing by the Phillies in an eventful 8-1 win on Monday.
The game featured the rarest of rare triple plays, with Aaron Nola, Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm turning the seldom-seen 1-3-5 triple play in the third inning. The game also featured the MLB debut of right-hander Michael Mercado out of the bullpen. The 25-year-old twirled a perfect eighth inning and registered his first major league strikeout.
Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm also combined to drive in all of the Phils’ runs. Harper went 3-for-5 with five RBI on a pair of doubles and a three-run home run. Bohm drove in three with a home run and double as part of his 4-for-5 evening.
Now the two teams will reset for Game 2, with a matchup that will delight pitching enthusiasts. MLB ERA leader Ranger Suárez faces off against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, who ranks among the leaders in a number of pitching categories in the American League.
